https://mirjamwaehlen.com/There-s-an-Ocean-in-My-Heart Wed, 13 Mar 2024 16:26:38 +0000 mirjamwaehlen https://mirjamwaehlen.com/There-s-an-Ocean-in-My-Heart There’s an Ocean in my Heart This series is inspired by one of my favorite books from bell hooks: ‘The Will to Change: Men, Masculinity and Love’ published in 2004 and I’m examining the question: “What is beauty…” Beauty to me can be found in the core of feminist theory. Not only that beauty is defined by diversity, regardless of race, religion, class or gender and men are encouraged to express themselves in ways that don’t conform to gender stereotypes and that they can break with sexist roles. We still live in a patriarchal society, and one of the effects of patriarchy has been to make males feel that being feared is preferable to being loved. Patriarchal masculinity maintains that real men must demonstrate their manliness by idealizing seclusion and disconnection while feminist masculinity tells men that by interacting with others and fostering a sense of community, they can become more authentic and real. That is enough for men to feel valuable; they don’t need to “do” or “perform” in order to receive approval or love. Feminist masculinity emphasizes strength as one’s capacity to be accountable for oneself and others, as opposed to strength being defined as “power over.” For males to enjoy collective liberation, patriarchy must be abolished. A dedication to gender equality and reciprocity as essential to and supportive of life forms forms the basis of feminist masculinity. Such dedication prioritizes life over death, nonviolent action over aggressive action, and peace over conflict. We don’t need to abandon the concept of masculinity, we’ld rather redefine it and reshape it. As a remnant of the Cold War era and the divided country, it stands as a testament to Berlin’s history—a symbol of the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of unity. However, this is not a work about the TV Tower. It’s&nbsp; about grief and loss, and how I have coped with these emotions. My period of chronic illness began a few weeks before the pandemic arrived in Germany in early 2020; that’s when I started working on this series. Unfortunately, my condition has worsened over the past few years. In these times of isolation and illness, the stoic routine of taking a picture of the TV Tower and its ever-changing moods became my lifeline. The mundane became profound, and each photograph became a symbol of my endurance and presence in the face of pain and uncertainty. It's a reminder of the strength found in the human spirit and the transformative power of art to heal and uplift, even in the bleakest of moments. It’s a love letter to the ever-changing city and to the slow process of analog photography. German romantic period; it describes the longing to exist in a reality other than one’s own. Places described as Sehnsuchtsorte are usually real – like Zanzibar.&nbsp;There are many reasons why Germans connect the name of an island on the eastern coast of Africa with such grand expectations. Most immediately, the tourism industry markets Zanzibar as a tropical paradise.&nbsp;While Zanzibar itself never fell under German administration, it was a site of overlapping imperial encounters, serving as a centre of the slave trade under Arabic rule before becoming a British protectorate in the nineteenth century. After the 1963 dissolution of its&nbsp;protectorate status, Zanzibar became part of the newly-formed postcolonial nation of Tanzania. For decades, Tanzania was one of the poorest countries in the world; while conditions have improved since the 1980s, it is still economically fragile.&nbsp;The German fantasy of Zanzibar as Sehnsuchtsort, then, exists in perpetual tension with the historical reality of Zanzibar as a product of unequal and often exploitative global developmental trends. The photographer Mirjam Wählen was well aware of this tension when she traveled to Zanzibar. Her portraits acknowledge the educational, infrastructural, and health care disadvantages faced by locals, without fetishizing them. They approach Zanzibari culture with curiosity and respect, refusing the typical German Sehnsucht that has transformed Zanzibar into an imaginary utopia while robbing it of its history. Ironically, for some Africans, it is Europe that acts as a Sehnsuchtsort: promises of a better life in Europe drive dangerous migrations, leading some to death in the Mediterranean and others to an uncertain future in poorly-maintained camps or a state of legal limbo. When Europeans pursue their Sehnsucht, the most they risk is disillusionment; when Africans pursue theirs, they risk their lives and freedom.&nbsp;The photos of Mirjam Wählen strive to replace Sehnsucht with a respectful perspective, a distance that nevertheless cares – a glimpse into a more multipolar reality.
